This animation explains how a cervical smear test (PAP test) is done. What can you expect? Does it hurt and what is the purpose of a cervical smear?

The Pap smear test is a very important test for the screening of cervical cancer. The test includes checking changes in the cells of the cervix. The smear test is very important as it helps in early detection if the cells turn cancerous and they can be fully treated. The symptoms of cervical cancer do not show early as it takes a series of change over years to turn into precancerous cells. Pap test should be regularly done when a girl becomes sexually active.

Women find it very difficult to cope with the anxiety of pap tests as it may show the onset of cervical cancer. But many suffer from the myth, and are not aware that abnormal Pap test results do not mean that they suffer from cervical cancer. It only means that some changes have been detected in the cervix cells and further testing would be needed.

A colposcopy procedure is done to remove sample cells from the cervix for microscopical examination. The FDA has also approved of new cervical imaging systems, which should be conducted right after colposcopy to check the areas of the cervix that are likely to contain the precancerous cells. The new system works in such a way that light is thrown on different areas of the cervix and their responses to the light are recorded. It gives a score to the tiny areas of cervix and makes a color map. On the basis of this color map, the doctors decide which tissues should be further tested with biopsy test. The color map helps to tell the difference between the healthy and diseased cells.

Pap tests are also not always correct. With encountering abnormal result as a Pap test outcome, one may also get a false positive result or false negative result as the outcome. A false positive result means that a woman is told she has abnormal cells in the cervix but they are actually normal. In case of false negative results, it is vice versa and the cells are really abnormal. False negative results occur because those cervical cells were missed. This delays the discovery and treatment of unhealthy cervix cells. This is why one should have regular Pap smear tests, according to the healthcare experts.

One should be aware about the developments in the cervix cells with regular pap tests. Women should also be knowledgeable about what can be the changes in the cells if the Pap test result is abnormal. Alertness and awareness helps in better healthy living

The scientific reference name for the Pap smear test is the Papanicolaou test. The test is name after its founder, scientist cum doctor, Georgios Papanikolaou. In his research, he found that the cervix cells change in appearance to quite a degree before they become entirely cancerous. So, this test helps in determination of precancerous cells which consequently can prove fatal to the individual.

This is test more commonly used to detect cancers in the female body. The procedure is basically performed to collect cells from the cervix for study. The cells are examined under the microscope. Abnormalities are recorded and treatment methods are employed if needed.

The guidelines for the Pap smear test are advocated by healthcare experts across the globe. The National Cancer Institute has given a detailed report on the execution of the procedure, frequency, etc.

The key points that need to be followed are:

The test can be performed by clinicians. These are medical professionals who are specifically trained for such testing. Experts, Physicians, Midwives, etc are the people who can carry it out.

The test is categorized as a gynecological test. It is performed to study the health and fitness of female organs such as vagina, ovaries, fallopian tubes, rectum, and other organs of the pelvic region.

The test is important because it can help in detection of diseases such as cervical cancer which can develop in the cervix region of the woman. The main objective of this test is to discover cells which do not function normally and which can lead up to tumors and cancers. Benign tumors, inflammations and infections can also be detected by this method

According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the screening must begin at the age of 21 years. The screening must be undertaken every 2 years. This frequency of testing can be decreased after the age of 30 to once in three years.

If abnormalities are reported, the individual might need to undergo further medical procedures for analysis and confirmation of the condition.

A woman who has been vaccinated for the HPV virus should also undergo the screening. Since the Pap smear test is basically done for cervical cancer which is caused by the HPV virus, it is presumed that a woman who has been vaccinated for the same may not need to undergo the test. This is an incorrect presumption because the body is not protected against all HPV viruses. Vaccines for ultimate protection are not yet developed and hence, the Pap smear test is very essential and vital for women.
